After Mercedes officially withdrew from all motorsport activities in 1955, only a couple of private enthusiasts were seen racing Mercedes-Benz 300SLs. Paul O`Shea, the most famous of them, had two roadsters prepared for racing by Mercedes-Benz. These vehicles were named "300SLS"; one of them, piloted by Paul O`Shea, won the 1957 US Sportscar Championships.

Hans Kleissl, along with other motorsports enthusiasts, united in HK-ENGINEERING`s "Rennsport" division, started racing their 300SL Roadsters and Gullwings back in 1955. Winning numerous international events since then. Among these were Goodwood, La Carrera Panamericana, Tour Auto, Nürburgring and others.
